What to Wear for a Couples Shoot

I get asked all the time- what should I wear for my session? I get it! It feels like a big decision! I have been meaning to do this for a while, but I finally decided to put together a blog post of a few tried and true tips that can hopefully help you out.

**Now, the most important thing you can read out of this whole post is this:

Don't dress the part just because you think you have to look a certain way. If you never dress up and hate to do so, then don't! You can wear casual outfits that are still cute and stylish. Want to go barefoot? Do it! That would be so awesome, especially in the right location. Want to do a session in your swimsuits? I'm down! But if you still need ideas, read on! And... if you've got style, don't let me hold you back. :)

1.  Coordinate colors and styles:  Try to complement colors and pattern without perfectly matching. For example, if you wear a floral dress, he could wear a solid shirt, or if you wear a solid dress, he could wear either a solid or subtly patterned shirt. If you both want to wear pants, try to mix and match materials. If you wear jeans, maybe he could wear khakis or slacks. This gives you some contrast between your outfits.

2.  Say yes to the dress: A long, light weight, flowy dress or maxi skirt photographs just beautifully and adds an element of movement to your photos. Plus, they are flattering to all body types. A knee length dress will work too. Or if you prefer pants, consider skinny jeans with a long, flowy top. (Really, anything flowy is a great idea!)

3.  Consider your colors: Solid colors tend to photograph best (think blush pink, cream, beige, gray, black, light blue, mauve, or even a dark hunter green.)  Avoid really bright colors such as orange, hot pink, turquoise, lime green etc, as these can cast colors on your skin. While solids are great, I do also love a pretty, subtle floral pattern, which bring an element of feminine flair to your outfit.

4.  Details, hair, and makeup: A statement necklace or stack of bangles is a great addition to your outfit. For shoes, wedges, heals, flats, or stylish sandals will do the trick. Avoid wearing sneakers or flip flops. Consider wearing your hair down with loose waves or curls for a soft look, and for makeup, try to keep it pretty natural looking, and accentuate your eyes so they really pop in your photos!

5.  Layers and texture: Texture on your dress or top (such as lace details) can add a lot of dimension to your photos. Denim, chunky sweaters, fun overalls- all good choices!! I also looooove when people bring simple, natural bouquets as well. They add tons of texture, variation, and an extra element of interest!

6.  For him: Men look super sharp in a button-down shirt with jeans, slacks, or khakis. Roll the sleeves up to mid forearm for a more casual look. Add a blazer or sweater if you want, and closed-toe shoes really finish off the look. (For guys, avoid logos, graphics, and running shoes) For a fun touch, suspenders or a vest can be super cool. Lay out your outfits side by side (or try them on together) and see what you think!
